Power BI and Dynamics 365

Hi Guys,

My client is implementing D365 on cloud. They are also planning to use power BI. So I am confused whether power bi comes along with D365? What licenses are required?

I am a developer. So do I need VSTS enterprise edition subscription for the development of power BI reports. What will the development environment for this? Do I need to use the VM which is created for D365 development for developing PBI reports?

DO we need to get seperate licenses for all the users to view PBI reports, or all the users that is added to D365 can view the reports?

Thanks in advance

RE: Power BI and Dynamics 365

    Good morning everyone!

We are implementing Dynamics 365 CRM and want to integrate PowerBI in two ways:

    - We want to add a power bi into the Account form, to show a small chart filtered automatically by the account I'm accessing to.

    - We want to be able to see full power bi reports in the dashboard/report section. (out of the accounts).

Do we need to purchase Power BI pro license for each user accessing the Dynamics 365 CRM so they can read the power bi reports? Or it's enough to go with the free license of power bi?

As far as we understood, if you want your user to access a report created centraly, you have to share it, and the sharing option requires Power BI Pro license both for the person sharing and the person reading the report.

Can someone help us understanding the Licensing required?

    Many thanks in advance!

    Hi Maverick,

I have already done that and thats why i am able to see same report through link section.  Only issue is, the report is not showing and giving error when i am attaching on formgroup control through code.

    Thanks

    Hi Sukrut,

I understand that user can see reports that are available only in his account and also Pro license is not required for integration. But for sharing my reports with another user Pro license is required and only then the user will be able to see the reports developed by me.

So it seems what I am following is correct. Thanks for your input Sukrut.

    Hi Newbie,

Seems like you haven't integrated power BI with D365. Please refer the following url. You can also find many blogs on this.

    Hi Maverick,

I have a question regarding how you integrated the Power BI report. I am also trying to do the same but unable to do so. I have added my PBIX file as a resource in AX. I can see and run this report through LINK section of workspace. However, I am not able to attach this PBIX file to FORMGROUPCONTROL like it is done in AssetWorkSpace workspace ANALYTICAL tab. Though I am not able to view the report in AssetWorkSpace also and getting error "Power BI embedded is not able. Please contact your administrator".

Please guide me on how you are showing report in workspace.

    Thanks

    Hi Maveric,

D365 server  contacts Power BI service on behalf of a user and you can see only tiles and reports to that particular account

I believe you must have gone through below link, per link you must have powerPI.com account ( A pro license is not required). Look at the section "Things you must know before you start"

    docs.microsoft.com/.../configure-power-bi-integration

RE: Power BI and Dynamics 365

Thanks Sukrut for your reply and sorry for my delayed response.

I have developed some Custom Power BI reports with data entities using my Power BI pro account and was able to integrate it with D365 and I could see all my reports. Now I want some other users in D365 also to view and interact with my report. For this the solution I found is, other user should also have Power BI pro account and I need to pin my report in an AppWorkspace and share it with the user. Now the user can add the PBI report to his PBI workspace, thus enabling him to add those report in his D365 workspaces also.

So my concern is, is this the correct way to share PBI reports in D365 to users? Or is there some other way to share the custom PBI reports in D365 with out creating a Power BI account for the end user?

    Thanks in advance.

RE: Power BI and Dynamics 365

    It doesn't come with D365 .

Here is the link where you can see pricing
You have to install powerquery for extracting and transforming data in Excel . More details can be found here

Here is content From Licensing guide

Microsoft Power BI in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Dynamics 365 for Unified Operations Plan and Dynamics 365 Plan users are not provided with any standalone or general-purpose Power BI license or use rights. Customers who require Power BI Pro will need to license and pay for it separately. Dynamics 365 for Unified Operations Plan and applications may embed Power BI content within the service User Interfaces. This is simply a product feature, and no Power BI licensing is required to access this content. Please consult the Dynamics 365 roadmap for more information on this feature. Dynamics 365 Enterprise Customer Engagement Plan and Customer Engagement Plan Business Application subscriptions include an option to embed Power BI content as a product feature, but require users to subscribe to Power BI (free user or Power BI Pro depending on content) separately to configure access to this content. More details are available in this article.
