Trying to attach to process for Debugging in Visual studio after PU 34 and version 10.0.10 upgrade and it's throwing this error when I use "w3wp.exe""This tasks requires application to have elevated permissions". See the attached image below.
VS is already running as administrator, not sure why I am getting this error.
Thanks
What kind of environment is this? A cloud hosted, MS managed or locally hosted? How did you install the update? From command line or via LCS?
Can you show a screenshot of the full VS window so that we can see that it's running as administrator?
I did RDP to my dev build server and am logged in as Admin and I installed the update from LCS
The screenshot doesn't show if you're running VS as administrator or not. Whether you login with "Admin" account to the VM or not doesn't have any impact.
It will show "Administrator" in the top bar of VS if you're running it as administrator.
Is it a Cloud hosted system or a Microsoft managed environment? What do you mean by "dev build server"? Which one is it? You should not debug on a build server. Build server should be used only for build purposes, you shouldn't ever need to open Visual Studio on that system.
And, in Cloud hosted / MS managed systems you should attach to iisexpress.exe, not w3wp.exe.
I am logged in as the Admin account. Also this worked fine before the upgrade and I used IISexpress.exe but I don't see it anymore in the list of processes so thought of using w3wp.exe. What am I missing?
Yes, you are using Admin account but are you running VS as administrator (=with elevated privileges)? To me it seems that this is one thing that you are missing. Right click VS icon and choose "Run as administrator...".
Could you please try that, and share a screenshot of the top bar of VS, like I did in my post? Thanks!
There was a deployment problem in the last week or two. Please redeploy this environment, as there are missing permissions.
Note the permission missing is not to debug w3wp. However, the permissions is missing to STOP w3wp so you can use IISExpress. You will have other issues on this box - you can't start/stop services, likely have no proper access to SQL, etc.
The deployment issue was fixed so if you redeploy this VM, you should be all good to go.
Thank you all for takign the time to reply. I will contact MS for this issue. Hopefully they can resolve it.
Again, if you're willing to redeploy you should do so since that will fix your problem and may shorten your time to fix as opposed to waiting for a back and forth. We told our support team to suggest the same thing.
Hello,
You always can attach debugger to iisexpress instead of w3wp without administrative permissions.
That is true, however the fact w3wp is still running means iisexpress is not running.
