Data migration from AX 2012 R3 to D365

Hi We currently have Dynamics AX 2012 R3 but will be implementing D365 Finance and Operations.  We are not going to do this through upgrade, rather we are going to exam the functionality of D365 Finance and Operations and compare our business process to decide how much out of box functionality we can use and how many extension we might need.  We know for sure we need ISV solution for Avalara tax.

The questions:

(1) Since this is not code upgrade, what is the suggestion for data migration for master and transactional data?

(2) With fast evolving technology, would it be better to use Azure Data Lake and Synapse for Data migration from AX to D365 FO?

Thank you very much!

    Hi Cavewoman,

As per my understanding, migrating data in D365 cannot be automated from AX2012.

Better approach is to make your AX closing data ready and then use Data management / excel add-ins to load it in D365. Excel add-ins has it's own limitation of course.

In case, if you want to migrate the historical data (say last 3 or 5 years), then that need to be loaded too in D365 for historical reporting.

    Regards,
    Sourav

    Hi Cavewoman,

    (1) It's not clear what context this question concerns - tools, data migration strategy, best practices. I would assume you meant data migration strategy. In that case, I would encourage your team to carefully evaluate if you really need detailed historical data in D365 F&O. The best price is to avoid migrating historical transactions to F&O and consider a data warehouse for historical reporting. However, the approach is supposed to be evaluated case by case and there is no one best solution.

    (2) Both options can serve well your business, but they have to be explored with deep analysis whether or not they will cover your business requirements in a long run. This should be evaluated by an architect who understands your current and future requirements as well as the landscape in general.

    Hi,

Azure Data Lake and Synapse is not for migration, but meant for analytics, so if your company plan to make an analytics or commonly known as BI, it is a good option, it will  have wider functionality supported such as AI and ML that Data Lake and Synapse can provide.

For data migration from AX to F&O, just like Morgan mentioned, the DMF function in F&O is applicable.

    Hope it help.

    Thanks,

    1) Data migration into D365 uses the Data management workspace to import data from legacy sources. Different partners will provide their framework of how they like to perform ETL, but ultimately it will be the DMF within D365 used to import the data.

    2) Better is subjective. It is an option to consider.
