Physical dimension by product variant

Posted on by 631

Hi,

as far as i can tell, even the latest Update Version of 365 for Operations and Finance, does not support

"PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS by PRODUCT VARIANT" meaning, having different physical dimensions for multiple Variants of the same Product. This seems to be a massive Gap, since one of the most common Product dimensions is "SIZE". This really throws us back with a customer, since physical dimensions are crucial for using Containerization. Customization seems very adventurous fiddling around with queries in containerization?

1. Has anyone had a decent work around for this issue?

2. i know this feature has been on the roadmap for developement, who has got inside to if this is acutally gonna happen, and when?

RE: Physical dimension by product variant

    The link https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365-release-plan/2019wave2/dynamics365-finance-operations/product-variant-uptake-volumetric

Is still talking about different sizes of a discreet item i.e. shirt sizes, not UoMs  such as different can sizes.

There are many different scenarios where the feature is needed but each needs to be considered separately e.g. for metal offcuts yu might always want to use the smallest piece size that will do the job. However for cans you might want to use the largest so as to get the best cost. If job need 50 litres you might want to open a 100 litre drum - maybe there are 10 painters who need a can each, or maybe its a product that has a shot expiry life once opened and the job will take some time.    So mrp logic is in a  quandary because the logic might change order by order, or item by item.

An inquiry or report development that shat shows the inventory of related items or variants in the way you require seems the best option. e.g. you might also want to view substitute item stock at the same time.  In a catering industry you might want to build a cost estimate for menu based on what is available and that might mean you want to look at stocks of several categories at the same time e.g. fish, meat, poulty, or all vegetabled  whether fresh canned or frozen etc. However for a theme I might only want to see the inventory of red or yellow items. Similarly for a paint there could be several shades of white that would do to paint a white line, or for a perfume there may be several  that could be used for a bubble bath and each could have different UoMs

So an inquiry screen of all items with their on hand inventory that can be filtered by different categories/attributes etc would be very useful.

In D365 a much wanted feature was added for production orders - in Ax 2012 we have  the “Material stock-out list but an order only shows up here after it is started.  we can in D365 evaluate shortages before release provided:

    • Only prod orders with a start date today or earlier.
    • Only prod orders with a status ‘scheduled” and sub-status “job scheduled”
    • For each order, the material shortage is then indicated

The screen top pane shows production orders and a shortage indicator. The bottom pane shows all materials for this order, with a shortage indicator for each component in the Production-BOM. So that might give a workaround option ie. to start with that code logic.  Conceptually you can create a dummy BOM for your master item with each variant as a component, QTY I UOM of that variant.

Raise a production order for e.g. 10,000 to see the shortages. Then cancel the order.

You would not actually want to do it that way but it might not be so difficult to program the logic to work the same for an ad hoc shortage  inquiry rather than an order.

Unfortunately, it's still 8 month away. We had to write an extension for it. It was not that easy to make it work with the WHS and TMS functions.

RE: Physical dimension by product variant

I think conceptually the problem is that the size variant is more intended for retail sales for  things like shoe size, and shirt size, not for different UoMs/pack sizes  of the same product.

The assumption I suppose is that you either stock in the lowest pack unit of issue and then set up UoM conversions between the UoMs, or you treat each as a separate item id.

In manufacturing your requirement makes a lot of sense, - but not necessarily for finished good sales - two pairs of size 5 don't make a size 10, the sale price and the cogs of a 1kg jumbo pack may be less than the for two 500g packs etc.

Any updates on this please? We have the same scenario with our client. Thanks.

RE: Physical dimension by product variant

agreed that's why I said there would be no  business logic - its not a solution just as workaround suggestion that might be better than nothing until Microsoft adds the feature - which seems a clear gap given the focus on both retail and wms

RE: Physical dimension by product variant

please check the original post: the whole point of this is for the variants to be working with containerization and volume calculation. its not a solution to put size data in some blank fields, nor use batch attributes.

RE: Physical dimension by product variant

Maybe you can have an open ended batch number for each size, and hold the sizes as batch attributes -but  there would be no business logic.

Otherwise another workaround maybe is to put the size data into the variant description? (Each product (or variant) can have its own description) e.g. "23-Large 10 x 5 x 1'
