Future of Dynamics GP?

What is the future of On Premises GP?  We currently have GP 2018 and are still on Fixed Lifecycle.  We are hesitant to go to Business Central (though cloud would be nice), but don't want to commit to an upgrade of my On Premises GP if this isn't going to be improved or supported much longer. There's big push to move to Cloud, so I'm just not sure how much love GP will get from Microsoft in the future. As it is, Management Reporter was last updated in 2012 and our vendor said MS will not be updating it any further.  FWIW, our new Controller used Sage Intacct at a prior company and loved it.

Microsoft is going to continue to release patches for GP semi-annually but they aren't going to be investing as much money into the GP platform as they are investing into D365 Business Central. I think that if you decide to stay on GP long term you are going to encounter more and more issues that are caused by compatibility. The problem isn't necessarily with GP - it's with the technology around GP. As Microsoft pulls resources away from GP and continues to evolve other things like Microsoft Office, operating systems, etc., I have to wonder how much is going to slip through the cracks in the way of testing. This is purely conjecture by the way. I could be wrong there.

What industry are you in? Sage Intacct plays well in some industries while it's not known to be strong in others... the same can be said for NetSuite and BC.

One quick win you should talk about with your controller is dropping MR and getting something like Solver Cloud or Jet Reports. Not kidding you - I was in a fractional controller role for a minute at a customer who was using MR and I took an entire day off of their month end close by putting in an excel-based reporting tool.

If you want to talk more about the GP roadmap, alternatives to MR or cloud ERP drop me a line - mscalamogna@schneiderdowns.com.

As for MR, I don't quite agree with Jo Markovich.. Based on your description, you seem to use basic reports only in MR and for that it's perfectly fine, except I don't recommend using the DataMart (DM).. DM is known to be prone of issues when you make changes to your GL account structure and every once in a while you have to rebuild the DM from scratch..
I still recommend to my clients to use the Legacy Connector in MR which pulls data straight from GP and doesn't have that issue with a constant update of a DM running in the background. GL Acct structure changes aren't a problem either.. The only comfort that user must give up with the Legacy connector is the fact they need to logon to the GP companies with their GP creds.. but even that can be saved in MR.

I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you. This "upgraded' forum doesn't notify you if someone replies or you're tagged. Nice.

You could use Jet Reports from Insight Software. That is really nice stuff.

There's also Power BI, now that they have paginated reporting, but you'd have to create all the reports yourself and I believe also need the Power BI Pro licenses.

Don't tell anyone, but I still have people using FRx, too. Still works with Windows 10/11.

@Joseph Markovich  what do you recommend other than MR for reports. We ONLY use MR for Profit and Loss and Balance Sheet, but are starting to have issues when we need to add or move accounts on the report.

It is absolutely going to continue to be supported. Business Central is......fine, but expect it to be a very costly and very painful process as you are reimplementing your ERP system. Don't get me started about the historical data issues, either! :)

Definitely get rid of MR, though. It's junk.

There is also the option to move your GP in the cloud and be hosted by Microsoft. You're basically using their systems for Active Directory, SQL Server and Remote Desktop.

Also, you can take advantage of a TON of the modern features out there in your Microsoft 365 subscription. Power Apps, Lists, SSRS, Power BI, etc to read/write data to/from GP.

Microsoft's marketing machine and the larger partners are working overtime to strike the fear of God into everyone running GP -- it's dead, it's going to be unsupported in 2025, it can't do what you need it to do, blah blah blah. Don't listen to any of it.

    Just my thoughts for you.
    Joe

    P.S. Sage?! Ack! :)

The short answer is 2028 and Beyond.  It is anticipated many GP Partners and ISVs will support Dynamics GP software past the Microsoft's "Beyond"

The Dynamics GP roadmap is published by Microsoft at the following link -

The following article published by Winthrop Development Consultants should resolve any doubt into the lifecycle addressing all the hear say and misinformation found online -

It is encouraged to upgrade your Dynamics GP to the latest version of 18.5 to take advantage of new features and retain support and compatibility.  Anticipated in October, Dynamics GP v18.6 will be released.
