Can a user view emails where the owner of the email record is in a different business unit? They cannot see other units contacts and accounts, but is that the same for emails.

Thanks Ben. What they wanted in the end was a particular Security Role's to only read there own Business Unit emails on Contacts and Accounts. To achieve this so the emails did not appear under Activity on Social Pane in Contacts and Accounts was to give read access to BU on Activity entity. After refreshing browser and testing this worked.

If its a single email you could share it with the appropriate users individually?

You could also provide global read access to activity records but given that you have restricted access to contact and account records I really can't see why you would want / allow users to be able to see all emails / phone calls without allowing them to see the contact / account details.... I would recommend checking the requirement as it seems to make very little sense on a data security basis.
