How do I map Retail vendor category to the Retail product category in Dynamics 365 FO?

I'm trying to import a vendor catalog and add the products to the retail product hierarchy. According to the little documentation that I could find I have to create a Retail vendor hierarchy and then "the vendor category must be mapped to a retail category in the retail product hierarchy form". I don't see any place to do that in the Retail product hierarchy form though and I can't find any documentation about it. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks so much!

    Hello Karin,

i was wondering to read about retail vendor hierarchy, as i know that does not exist.

The only way to make a match between Procurement category and retail category is that you Name both same and put products in same named categories on retail and procurement.

According to my Infos retails only works for sales not for purchase

Hi Albrecht, thanks for your reply. The Retail vendor hierarchy does exist. You'll find it in the list of category hierarchy types when you associate a role with a category (Category hierarchies > Setup group > Associate hierarchy type). You can assign it to a vendor in All vendors > Retail fasttab. In AX 2012 there was a fasttab on the retail product hierarchy categories for mapping them to the vendor retail categories. In D365FO it seems to be a muddled mess (incl. the documentation).

Yes, retail is mainly for sales but it also has special functions that involve setup of new products and procurement. These functions are not just beneficial for Retailers but for any company that re-sells the products they buy (wholesale, distribution).  You can calculate sales prices based on purchase prices + margin when vendor products are imported. The retail product hierarchy can be used when you add products to PO lines and it is more useful than the procurement hierarchy in many scenarios. Among other things you can set defaults for all product settings on the categories and if you add new products those defaults will be used. That works better than using item templates in many cases.

And to clarify further: I plan to use the Retail product hierarchy for sales and purchase (distribution company that buys & sells the same products). The retail vendor categories are just needed to enable sales price calculation based on cost during vendor catalog import.
