Are IFD / ADFS required for Server Side Sync from CRM 8.2.2 on premise to Exchange online?

Hi,

We are currently running CRM 8.2.2 on Premise with the email router connected to Exchange Server online.

  • We do not have IFD.
  • we are not interested exposing CRM outside of our intranet for now.
  • We are not using Outlook. We only want to sync the outgoing emails from CRM and the incoming emails to the CRM queues.

Because the Basic authentication (EWS ) from the email router to Exchange will be deprecated on 12/31/22, we need to replace the email router with the Server Side Synchronization pretty quickly.

We have read that IFD was required on only one article (from Hitachi), but this was not mentioned on the Microsoft articles we read.

We are planning to upgrade to CRM online  and want to minimize the changes on our current system at this time.

Are IFD / ADFS required for Server Side Synchronization to work in this case?

Thanks

Christian Betrisey

Hi, Thanks for all who responded. I opened a support case with Microsoft.

I was first told that IFD was required, but upon further investigation, they confirmed that IFD IS NOT REQUIRED ANYMORE

"There has been an update on the requirements, and IFD is not required anymore, that's why the article got updated and that part was deleted. I feel sorry sharing wrong information, I wasn't aware of this last change. I took this time to confirm with the product team about this concern, and they made clear what I just mentioned."

    Thanks Pedro,

This is what I was afraid of.

In the meantime, we did open a support case with Microsoft to get additional information on how to proceed.

I will post what we learn from them in this post in case others are interested. My guess is that other onPremise CRM implementations will run into the same issue.

Thanks Efrain,  I saw the overview from the url you gave, but it pertains to 9.1, which itself requires IFD.

Looks like according to Pedro in the next answer, they do require IFD.

    Hello Christian Betrisey,

    Hope you are well.

Although documentation doesn't explicitly tell you need IFD, taking into account you need to expose CRM url to the internet so exchange online can connect, it would be implicit that you need ADFS and IFD to do the setup.

This because our only supported mechanism to expose CRM to the internet is via ADFS and IFD.

This is not a requirement to set up Server-Side Sync.  Here is the link to the overview for SSS:
