Item/Product Attribute - required/mandatory..?

I have created a long list of item attributes, and it is requiring a default value.

Is it possible to disable this, to allow a blank/null value?

    i notice that when you create the attribute, you can close the screen and save the record with a blank field.. Thus allowing blanks :)
