Power Pages Captcha suddenly fails in lower environment

Without any known changes taking place, we're suddenly unable to complete Captchas in our dev environment. The affected page is fine if we remove the Captcha. While it's there, we see this console error on page load:

Uncaught Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerParserErrorException: Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerParserErrorException: The message received from the server could not be parsed. Common causes for this error are when the response is modified by calls to Response.Write(), response filters, HttpModules, or server trace is enabled.
Details: Error parsing near 'he audio code</a>|0|hiddenField|__EVENTT'.
