Upgrade AX 2012 to D365 via LCS Questions

Hi All,

We have a requirement to upgrade AX 2012 R3 to D365 V10 via LCS .

Q 1) The client wants to only migrate the data as he has very few customizations,  so the question is that is it even possible to upgrade to D365 only data without upgrading the code. If so then wont there be data related issues and errors.

As for LCS approach we have create a new project of upgrade methodology  in LCS and uploaded the AX 2012 modelstore after applying the necessary patch KB 4035163

Q 2) We have generated the estimator report and there are 4 files however it is not clear from the thse file what should be the estimate as it shows eg.

1) Report migration summary which shows the estimation bucket summary ,form patter with percent covered 70% and so on in different sheets .

pastedimage1623563012375v5.jpeg

2) Report Task List : It has different elements with generic estimation of eg .15 mins for around 500 objects.

Now the question is how do I make out what should be the estimation based on which report ?

Q3) After the LCS upload what are the steps as for the links in Msdn is not that clear and precise.

Upgrade from AX 2012 to Finance and Operations - Finance & Operations | Dynamics 365 | Microsoft Docs

Eg. upload model and data in LCS to run the code upgrade and then configure the development environment with VSTS.

Then how to move it to test environment and then to Live.

Kindly let me know your thoughts so that a proper estimation is created and if possible step by step process will be helpful.

Thanks,

Vicky

    Hi Vicky,

I will provide my two cents.

Q1) If you don't want to move customizations, you can do this. I'm not sure if the customizations contains new tables and fields. I think you can create a new AX 2012 R3 environment without the customizations and use a restore of the production database for this. If you synchronize the database, it will remove the data model changes of the customizations. Then you can upgrade the database.

Q2) The report you are looking at is to show the impact if you want to move customizations. This is not relevant for you in this scenario.

Q3) The model is for the code upgrade, which is not required if you want to move to a vanilla environment. You only have to do the data part. Can you tell if you have questions on the data upgrade part?

The VST part is required if you want to create new customizations or if you want to deploy ISV solutions.

PS: You now have created a LCS project yourself. Note that Microsoft will create a new customer LCS project which will have space for a UAT and production environment.

    Hi Andre,

    ACtually there are 2 cases.

    1) Migrate without the code scenario.

So what you are suggesting is create a new AX 2012 R3 vanilla instance and push the prod database on it which on sync will remove the customizations if any.

And then use this DB to migrate, but then in this case is the code upgrade step skippable ?

I mean as per my understanding the code upgrade step is mandatory and cannot be skip . Since it is vanilla it wont have any code upgrade issues I guess that is what you meant here.

So in this case we just need to move the db to dev and then to test and prod.

    2) Migrate with the code.

In case the code also needs to be migrated then what should be the estimation as per the estimator report of task list and upgrade summary.

Does the object in the task list only needs to be migrated or those shown in the form section of the report with 70% form covered and so on.

What is have still not understand is what will be done after the model and DB is uploaded and then what needs to be done in VSTS to fix the code issues.

Also how later this is moved to the test and prod environment.

Microsoft will create a new customer LCS project which will have space for a UAT and production environmen -> so in this case do we need to raise any request or it will be done automatically.

Thanks again for your valuable inputs.

    Hi,

The documentation from Microsoft is on docs.microsoft.com. For example Prepare to migrate to Dynamics 365 for Operations

    Hi Vicky,

    1) The code upgrade is not mandatory. If you are not performing the step, you are just upgrading the data.

    2) I don't have the information with comparison if the estimations are correct or not. At the time, I did some upgrades, we just upgraded the code and started to work on moving all to extensions. It will depend on the number of objects and how much coding is overlayered in AX 2012.

New LCS project: When you buy a subscription, the project is automatically created.

    Hi Andre,

I have the same question. Based on this small, medium and large bucket, how can we convert this into the time estimate for our client.

If you see we have lots of under those category. How can I make sure if I need to provide ex: 10 mins or 20 mins for small bucket and 40 mins to medium.

What should be the base to provide the time estimation ? I think we can not review each and every object to provide the estimation.

Unfortunately, I don't have a valid reference calculation for you. As mentioned above, when I converted AX 2012 coding to Dynamics 365, we just started the work without using this estimation sheet. I'm not involved in customer upgrades for the last 3 years.

The totals are quite high. Maybe you can take some samples from each bucket and then extrapolate the calculation for the total number per bucket?
