Master Planning through AX 2009

Hi Guys, we have not been using AX for Master Scheduling or Forecast Scheduling, I just want to know if anyone uses only AX 2009 for master Planning as I have heard a lot of people stating it is not good at doing this. Also could you recommend a good resource showing the screens used to do this. I need to see Jobs through works station in a given period, also works orders planned and forecast.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Dex

Not sure what people have said it is not good but I implement it in most projects. You need to understand it and start simple. I would suggest the manual on customersource is a good starting place, set up some basic coverage groups, run the master plan and see what it produces. It is ultimately a calculator balancing supply and demand based upon how you want it configured. I would recommend you get your partner in to model and suggest this for you, it should save you a lot of time.

While 2012 definitely added some improvements, I wouldn't quite characterize 2009's MP as "not good", but there are some tricky tuning of futures and action messages (and coverage groups) that can make or break the acceptability of the results. Scott Hamilton has published a few excellent books covering both 2009 and 2012 MP that are worth reading.

My background is extensive APICS-oriented materials management, have used several major ERP systems, and AX "works", though uses some very confusing and unusual terms and methodology. It took me a while to get my head around "negative days" and "dynamic negative days"...

    Hi Weaverisky,

Thanks for the heads up with the Customer Source manual. I will look it up, I have kind of set it up and showed it to our planning guy who keeps picking holes in it stating its not showing him the information as he would like to see it.

I will look at the manual first.

    Thanks for the help

    Hi ChanStevens,

I will check the Scott Hamilton books out now, Your right the terminology of the manuals is hard to get your head round, Also I find that looking at the information our planning guy wants to see is not easy and over a few different screens, I can pull this into Excel for him but I hate operating out to another system from AX.

Hey if you guys tell me it works and is used in production then my Planner will just have to learn it.

Wasn't expecting a reply from anyone TBH.

Thanks again guys for the help.
