NAV 2016 - Handheld computer / Mobile scanning devices

Hi

Can anyone advise me on what handheld computer/mobile scanning devices could be used in a warehouse house environment. This would be for scanning the barcode during a picking process for instance.  I know we can do it with phones and tablets, but I am looking for something more rugged and suited to the environment.

Thanks - Noeline

It depends on the requirements to the processes and how mobile you want to be in your warehouse, and to which extent you want data "real-time". Generally, there are three options:

    1. USB barcode scanner, that is attached to local PC/Laptop with USB cord. Basically it just eliminates the need of manual searching for the barcode in the system or manual entering of that into the field - by reading the stripes, you will get your barcode number in the active field of your system. This option does not require any major additional setup, but just purchasing a 15-20 USD device (check AliExpress). If your workers can operate near their working places with a PC, this is the ideal solution.

    2. Off-line terminals. More expensive, but they can only read the barcodes in a sequence of operations that you would setup in the device. Then, you would need to return with the device to the laptop and put it into the cradle. System would read the data and create needed documents, which you would then post. Those are good when you need to read a set of items by this scanner and then form a shipping document in the system, or put a certain item in certain shelf in the warehouse that is marked with a barcode also.

    3. On-line terminals. Those are the most expensive, and have connection to your database via e.g. wifi network. They can provide you with the information of current total quantity of certain item when you scan the barcode, or how much has been reserved, and many other information right from the system. You can have a mobile client installed there, or you can use RDP connection to the system - usually such devices have TTF screens with (relatively) high resolution. We frequently used Motorola devices as it proofed to be quite reliable. But, there are many other options on the market.

Thank you for the prompt response. I would be looking at the 3rd option, but my challenge is I have no idea what the specification should be on the device?  There is a MOTOROLA MT2070  with Windows CE 5.0 that I have seen but I don't know if it will work. Perhaps that could use RDP? You speak of  installing a mobile client. From what I've seen  that would be windows 8.1, 10, android or ios. I don't see Windows CE 5.0. And I should qualify, its for NAV 2016 and possibly NAV 2013R2.

I am using Intermec Ck3 with 1d and 2d scanner. Them has installed Windows Mobile and built it RDP Client. They works really good. I have the application in 4 Windows 7 virtual machines, and I connect without issues, the only thing is that if you doesnt use the hand held computer, after 10 minutes it closes the rdp connection. But reconnect is fast, as the user and password could be saved. New Ck3 costs about 1000$, but I bought used ones by 400$.

Oh thank you so much Sinase! This is a good start. That model has been replaced with CK3R and CK3X and I will see where I can source them.

I would not recommend Windows CE as this is a dead end software. Better use Windows Mobile options. You can use RDP to connect to your terminal server, or there are solutions similar to what MultiSoft is offering - MobileNAV (http://www.mobilenav.com/).

pretty good utility can be find on the chinese websites. just check up by using the key words or pics. Also, I would truly recomend you using the Alitools extension, cuz it gonna sort the best offers from the qualified sellers and also track the parcels. In case you'll need it, here is the link - https://alitools.io/en good luck
