Can anyone please give me information of the Item arrival in the Journals section of Inventory and Warehouse Management in AX 2012. I want an understanding of it from business and functional point of view.
Thank-you.

It is really a segregation of duties. Purchasing do not want the stores people in the original purchase order screen, so they use the item arrival screen to register stock in from a purchase order, then at some point someone has to create the delivery note from the registered stock.

Item arrival is used for registeration of items/PO

A purchase Order has following states

    1. PO Creation
    2. Conformation
    3. registration of item and picking list
    4. Packing slip/product receipt
    5. Invoicing of PO

step#3 registration of items can be done from two locations(screens)

    • Either you can do this from PO directly
    • or you have to choice to do it with Item Arrival registration

you might be thinking if the process can be done from PO, what was the need to provide a separate journal from items arrival registration?

It's mainly for sake of segregation of duties, so that warehouse people don't bother to  have access to PO. instead they can just do their work within warehouse/inventory management

    Hi Maha,

    I would add two points.

An item arrival journal is one way to 'register' the items into inventory. Registration is an optional step - you don't have to do it. But if you want a way for the goods-in people to receive items without actually posting the product receipt themselves, you need to use it.

You can get AX to create Item arrival journals for you by using the 'Arrival overview' form. This form shows all expected receipts into the warehouse (including purchase orders, transfer orders and customer returns), and can be filtered in lots of different ways. I quite like it!

There's a good functional video of this on the Customer Source, which I assume you should have access to?

Drumcode can you please give me the link to that functional video.

I can't really provide the link because you have to authenticate to see it. Log in to the Customer Source, select E-Learning from the menu and then select Distribution and Trade from the list of available courses, Item Arrival is part of the syllabus in this particular course.

All that answer are ok but one main cause missed by all of them is that if your purchase order is big and you need to received the item so you have to go line by line and register the item which will consume more time from the user. but if you use an arrival journal you can do this easily at once. basically ease the process of registration.
