Upgrading from Dynamics 365 CRM 8.2 to 9.0

Sorry, but I am having trouble locating a good document of the steps to upgrade to version 9.   I have version 9 installed on a new server and pointing to a new SQL server.  Do I simply import my Organization databases?  What about the Config database -- how do carry over my settings?

I found: Plan your upgrade to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Server | Microsoft Docs and it says there are 3 options, but I can't find the steps to the three options.

Microsoft Dynamics Server upgrade options

There are three different upgrade options:

  • Migrate by using a new instance of SQL Server

Thank you!

    Hello Grif500w,

    Hope you are well.

I'll review this documentation later and see if there is some opening to improve it.

Moving on, the steps are more simple than it might look like.

    - Have a server properly updated to v9, ideally to v9.1 as its the lastest:

    support.microsoft.com/.../microsoft-dynamics-365-on-premises-cumulative-updates-ed51f905-cf4e-3641-dc7c-afe2b868eeb9

    - Restore the source DB that you want to upgrade into the SQL attached to that new deployment

    - Import the Organization, which will apply the patch installed on the server

Regarding MSCRM_config, This should never be "migrated" as it contains data unique to the previous deployment.

You should always make the changes you require on that new server.

Let me know if you have additional doubts.

Thank you!  This is the solution I had concluded, but just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.  I appreciate your time and prompt response.

I can't seem to find the 9.1 download.  It is not in my VLSC or MPSA.  I am checking with the company we buy our MS products from.

    Hello Grif,

I don't know much about VLSC or MPSA, but since 9.1 is a service pack, maybe it doesn't require to be on VLSC and you just get it from the public page above. It makes sense hat only 9.0 RTM is there as that is the one that you need to fill in a license key, and VLSC download brings your license key inside.

Thank you!  I finally figured that 9.1 is an SP.  I am glad because my orgs would not import into 9.0, but seem to be working in 9.1!
