Am I missing something or am I correct that it appears that we can't reply to Instagram.

You can't comment or like Instagram posts directly, if you are worried that you open the original post, and here comment and like but also you must logged in Instagram. therefore i give a useful application for you alarm app windows 10 where now you can manage your time table by the help of your laptop.
Correct, you currently cannot comment or like Instagram posts directly in MSE, but there is a button on the post called "Open original post"... you can click that to open Instagram.com and comment right there in the browser (assuming you are logged into Instagram)
