Product Builder error FormBuildStringControl

 Hi,

we are using the Product Builder module for the configuration of pretty sophisticated products. In fact some models got that big that it took more than five minutes to open them. Before migrating to AX 2009 everything worked fine though, but now I get errors whenever I try to configure a new model. It just won't take some simple rules so I guess some of the classes got lost during the migration.

If anyone knows more than me about this error I do appreciate your comments a lot. Following is the error message it sends whenever accepting  a finished configuration (note that models work until accepting, and only throw the error when opening the respective model from the quotation or sales order):

(C)\Classes\FormBuildStringControl\displayLength
(C)\Classes\PBABuildForm\setGroupFieldProperties - line 8
(C)\Classes\PBABuildForm\buildField
(C)\Classes\PBABuildForm\buildTabPage
(C)\Classes\PBABuildApproveForm\buildFormDesign
(C)\Classes\PBABuildForm\run
(S)\Classes\PBAExecuteSalesLine\pbaApprove - line 18
(S)\Classes\PBAExecute\runConfig - line 47
(S)\Classes\PBAExecute\execute - line 10
(C)\Forms\SalesTable\Methods\pbaConfigureLine
(C)\Classes\FormButtonControl\Clicked

I also created a full report about this error, anyone who thinks (s)he can help please send me your email-address to falk.m@gmx.net so I can send it to you. Thank you and best regards,

Falk

Sorry, please ignore the paragraph starting with  "Normal 0 21 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4..." I guess I should use IE...

...but another interesting detail: I tried a new simple two variable-model, one variable modifiable, the other one hidden. No rules, no validations, nothing, just these two variables.

Connecting this simplest model to a configurable item and opening it from the sales order the same error appears when accepting the configuration! So there is definately something wrong (in denmark)!

    Thanks again, regards,

    Falk

    Hi Falk.

Did you find an answer to this error? I am experiencing the exact same product model error in my AX3 to AX2009 upgrade. If you found an answer, please let me know.

    Thanks, Nate.

    Falk,

We went thru this and about 8 variations on this, it all had to do with the conversion of course but we had a 3rd party hired to fix them so I never heard of the specific solutions...my advice if you're going this alone is to turn on the AX debugger else bump it to the conversion team.

    Thanks, Kevin and Nate,

actually I got some help from a user (thanks again, Brion!) and here goes the reason of the problem:

If you have a validation rule which hides a modeling variable under certain conditions, and then you have that modeling variable be the highest priority in a variable group, the hidden variable prevents the variable group from being properly instantiated. This causes the stack trace error. By reassigning the variable priorities so this problem variable is not at the top of the variable group, I no longer get the error.

And in fact, there is a hotfix for this, the KnowledgeBase article is 969080, so all you need to do is running the roll-up witht the hotfix and it should work.

Hope that works for you. Best luck,pr

    Falk
