Hello,
I'm new to GP and was asked to provision a dev system of our prod GP(2016). Can this be accomplished with cloning system, change the name and restore DB? Or this can simply be accomplished with a fresh install and restoring DB.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.
If you're just trying to make a copy of your GP 2016 production system, into a dev environment you can do testing with or what not, you could use the steps/scripts in this article:

Derek,
Thanks for the reply. So it's prety much a SQL backup and restore to new system? Do I have to install anything else for the server?
That's it as far as the databases, then you'd have to install Dynamics GP 2016 at the same version/build, with same features installed as on the 'live' environment. Other than that, it would just be a copy of any modified forms and reports that you may have.
Can I install GP then restore prod DB over or install GP then point to the DB server? I have not install GP so don't know what's required. I've done Exchange,CRM, and Sharepoint before but not GP. Can you recommend a setup or design guide? Better yet, pay support? Always, thank you for replying.
It doesn't matter, as GP uses a ODBC DSN to connect to SQL Server/databases.
You can open a support case by calling 1-888-477-7877, othewise you can also open support cases through PartnerSource or CustomerSource, if you have access to those.
Thanks
DTLA, just make sure this is not being used as another production server. You can follow the steps in KB878449 or do a
PTV of your GP server.
Easy to install GP on the new SQL Server, and create the company / companies you want to have access to in the DEV site, then restore the databases from PROD to DEV. You can not just install GP on a DEV machine and point to the PROD DB via ODBC - that would open you up to huge potential problems.
We do this all the time - it is the safest way forward to build the DEV site.
Once it is running, you can create workstations that point to DEV and if you want to have PROD users do some tesing, you can create an ODBC connection on their workstation that points to the DEV - without over writing the PROD system.
Hope this helps.
Bill,
Thansk for the info. Is installing GP as easy as just clicking next until complete or little more work to it?
Almost - if you have done CRM you have enough tech knowledge it is easier. You will need to know all the application pieces that are running on the PROD system or you will encounter issues with the move from PROD to DEV
You need them installed on the DEV or you can do a base code install on the DEV machine and then copy the GP client folder from a PROD machine - update the paths in the DYUTIL.set and DYNAMICS.set - I have done this a number of times.
If you want some quick assistance send me a pm and we can talk about it off line.
Good luck.
