Different names for the same BOM??

Hi All,

I'm very new to Dynamics. I am fiddling around with the set up of BOMs. My question is why is it that you can have copies of the same BOM number with different Names?

For example:

BOM                                 Name

----------------------------        ----------------------

BOM000011                     bomabc

BOM000011                     bomdef

BOM000011                     bomghi

They all contain the exact same lines and when I change the lines in any one "copy", the others are updated with the exact same change. I am thinking that this has something to do with the setup somewhere but I do not have admin permissions.

Thanks for any insight.

    Hi,

Can you indicate which form you are using for seeing this behaviour? Also please tell the menu path for getting there. Is it a standard form or do you have some customizations?

    Hello Andre,

Thanks for the reply. The path is:

Product Information Management > Common > Released Products

I then choose an item (Production Type = BOM) then

    > Engineer > Lines

Under 'Versions', I can keep adding the same BOM number. For each copy of the same BOM number, I can assign a different name.

I am not sure of the level of customization with regards to this form but I am guessing it is close to nil.

    Any insight is appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Ayman

You are pressing the "New" button and then selecting the same BOM I presume which brings in the same information. One change in one place will actually impact on all. What you need to do is select the "Create BOM" button, which gives you the option to copy, but based upon the number sequence will give you a new reference.

The ability to "pick" a BOM is to use a common BOM across many items, especially useful with configurations and configuration groups where you define one flexible BOM that can be used by many items - although my personal preference is to create a new unique ID for each item to allow item based changes.

I get that. I was hoping to be able to use the same BOM number but with different versions. I guess that is not possible.

Nope, the BOM number is the same and used everywhere which can be attached to many items, you can use versioning and then update the item, so you can have BOM0009 against item X and item Y and then update item Y to reflect a change and it will be BOM0010. ideally I would have a BOM Version per item and use the create new BOM button and then copy from an existing BOM.

If item Z is based on an engineering drawing and it goes from Rev A to Rev B, how do I show that in AX? Say item Z is used in both X and Y as in your example above. In BOM0009 it remains at Rev A but in BOM0010 it changes to Rev B. How is it done without changing the Item Number?

Then the revision becomes critical and if you do not change the item number you need a product dimension to differentiate it. I remember an add-on by To-Increase that had a dimension called revision, and had a revision page where you could link to drawing numbers etc.
