Journal 'Locked by system'

We have a journal batch that we're unable to edit or delete as its showing as being 'In use', but without a user name in the 'In use by' column.

On checking the Blocking tab it has 'Locked by system' set to 'Yes', which we're unable to change.

Does anyone know how to remove the locked by system setting in D365 for Finance and Operations?

I've seen Community solutions for Dynamics AX, but they involve using AOT to change the setting in the table.

    Hi Chris,

    With correct permissions, you should be able to unlock the journal on the form. Have you asked someone with a system administrator role?

    Hi André,

    I'm a system administrator. I don't have the ability to change the setting. It's as if its greyed out on the form.

    Hi Chris,

    You are correct. I was mixing the blocked by user option. If there is really no process running (e.g. batch posting), you can try to create an incident for Microsoft Support. Another (not supported) option is create a runnable class to unlock the journal.

    Thanks André.

    I logged the issue with Microsoft Support and they've unlocked the journal using a MSSQL script to change the field within the table.

    They advised that currently there is no method of changing this setting in the UI, so if anyone else has this issue it will need to be logged as a call with Microsoft Support as a Data Fix request.

    I have same issue with an inventory journal. It's only got 600 lines for goodness sake and has been validating for 30 minutes ! Locked and can't do a thing with it ! System Administration role is useless !

    Personalize the form and add the "Locked by system" checkbox to the form. This allowed me to uncheck the box and edit the journal. System still thinks it's in use, but at least it's not locked and you can edit the journal and continue (despite what D365 thinks !!) ....

    Hi Andre,

    There are two blocking methods can happen in dynamics 365 / Dynamics AX 2009,2012.

    1. In used

    2. Locked by system.

    However, "In used" blocking method can happen regularly in any dynamics system as the system allows only a single user to take an action (read/write/update/delete) at a time on a journal operation.  The reason is, from AX 2009, it is built with Optimistic concurrency control in the relational database. With that option called OCC, it  allows multiple transactions to be completed frequently without interfering with each others and that is where the "in used" option came into the picture. Through that system triggering point, other users who are trying the use the same journal will be informed by "In used" enabling check box.

    The second blocking called "Locked by system" will take place very really, probably some smoothly running users might not have experienced in this blocker. However, this kind of an issue can happen when uploading journals during the production time. For example, the uploading vouchers might be duplicated with user entering data to the system. In that case, system will get struck when user is trying to post the duplicated vouchers in the system. To avoid these types of misbehavior operations, Dynamics has introduced "Locked by system" triggering option. User will be entirely blocked by the system till duplicated records are deleted. Finally, system should be restarted with the help of administrator to back to the normal.

    Hi Kasun,

    When a journal will be posted, it will be locked by the system. It has nothing to do with duplicate vouchers or other settings. This is to prevent user updates in the journal during the posting to avoid errors. After posting, this flag is cleared. However, when there is a system failure, the 'Locked by system' might be still enabled. In that case, the user himself cannot unlock the journal. A system administrator should be informed to help out.

    Thank you very much for your elucidation. I was studying on this as i got this issue from one of my clients company and i rectified the issue where some vouchers were duplicated due to production time journal upload.
