I have a question about the warehouse module and bins.
A quick backstory: I have a customer who wants to start using bins without Direct put-away and pics. We will start using bins at existing locations. We have concluded that the best way to do this is to remove all the inventory from the location (without bins), then activate bin mandatory in the location card, and then adjust the inventory back into the location with the bins. The customer also uses a hand scanner.
In addition to this, the customer wants NAV to propose a warehouse location (bin) where there is an available balance. They do not want to have to go into each order and decide which bin an item should be picked from, they want it to be based on stock control. It should also be a floating warehouse, they do not want to define by default that an item should always be in a certain warehouse location. Does anyone know if this is possible in standard or if it requires development? When receiving an item in the warehouse the warehouse worker must specify in which bin they have placed the item. However, it is also preferable if there is a function that suggests that "there are already two of this item in this bin, use the same bin". Is that a function within standard or does it require development? Best regards, Eva
To find information like : there are already two of this item in this bin, use the same bin
we can navigate to : item card->bin contents to see the details.
You are correct in how to setup a Location for Bins the way you've outlined. When you setup Bins and define the Bin as Fixed and Default this will appear when you enter Sales Orders and their is inventory present for picking. Not sure if you will Require Receipt and Put-Away and Require Shipment and Pick, which will also show the where to put inventory (receipt/put-away) and picks.
You are correct that Directed is more defined and directed to the user where to go to take or place items. If you want to see how the setting interact in NAV, open CRONUS. White = FULL ADVANCED Warehousing with Directed. Orange = Require Receive and Bins. Green = No directed and No Bins. Use this to see how NAV will present the Bin information to a User and this will help you decide what settings you will use. I have used many combinations over the decades for my customers.
Hi, if you want to use default bin, you can refer the following link.
As for the quantity in Bin, you need to go to Bin Contents to check.
Unfortunately, on the page such as sales orders, there is no feature to check the quantity by Bin directly.
So, If you want to make some judgments based on the quantities in Bin, or special processing, you may need to customize.
Hope this will help.
Hi Steven Chinsky!
So, if I don't choose Fixed or Default that means that the bin is floating. I guess that means it won't appear in a sales order for example (and the user must enter the bin manually). Is that correct?Thank you for your answer! Helps a lot.
What a great idea! I will test with the different locations that are already set up in standard.
Hi ZHU YUN
Thanks a lot for the clarification, it really helps! This forum is great!
I just have two more questions:
So, if I don't choose Fixed or Default that means that the bin is floating. I guess that means it won't appear in a sales order for example (and the user must enter the bin manually). Is that correct?
And if the customer wants NAV to propose a warehouse location (bin) where there is an available balance and they do not want to have to go into each order and decide which bin an item should be picked from (they want it to be based on stock control), this will require customization?
Here is what happens in your question:
Bin with both flags off:
Now a Sales Order with no Fixed or Default, but you can drill into Bin to see Bin location.
Change to Fixed or Default:
Hope this helps.
What the customer wants is exactly what Direct Pick and Put Away does. it makes suggestions for bins given advanced logic you can control via setup. It does though require Whse. Receipt, Put-Aways, Picks and Whse.Shipment transactions to be used.
Without Directed Pick and Put Away it uses static information to populate bin codes on transactions.
Your options are to use Directed Pick and Put Away or introduce development. The warehousing functionality is very complex so would not suggest development.
Your idea of removing stock than chaning the bin rules on the locaiton is good. You could also create a new Location and move the stock using a Transfer Order, this would keep a better inventory audit.
Hope this helps, Claudio
Yes, if Floating you will need to do a lookup to see which Bin has the Item to fulfill the Line.
Hi Claudio Martell!
I totally agree with you. Using Directed Put away and Pick would be a much more preferable option.
Thank you very much!
Hi again Steven Chinsky!
Okey, now the difference is very clear to me. Thanks for the screenshots :)
Hi Steven Chinsky (Steve Chinsky)!
I have a question that came up while working on activating bins in the system since I encountered some issues while doing so. We managed to remove all the inventory from the location (without bins), then we activated 'bin mandatory' in the location card. We did this successfully by using config.packages. However, when we wanted to adjust the inventory back into the location with the bins (by importing our excel file) the quantities were messed up and we couldn't figure out what the problem was.
Would you please explain how you would do this in the system? How would you remove all the inventory from the location that has no bin and then adjust the inventory back into the location with the bins? I would really appreciate your input here.
If I had a Location and turned on Bin Mandatory I would have open the Item Ledger Entries table and filtered on Open. This will show me all the Items that have a QOH. Then I would create an Item Journal and add 1 line with a Negative Adj. I would then Open in Excel so I have the Item Journal with the fields. I then create all the Negative rows for the Items Open in the ILE. Then I will create a Positive Adj. for the same Items and this time add a Bin Code. This also allows me to confirm the Unit Cost is the same.
Do you follow the steps? I can provide pics if you need them.
Hi Steven Chinsky
Thanks for the reply. I did the following:
1. I searched for Physical Inventory Journals, I calculated the inventory and filtered on the location.
2. I exported the result to excel so I would keep track on the original values of the inventory in my location.
3. I changed the Quantity (physical inventory) to 0 on all rows and then I posted it.
4. I went back to the location and activated Bin Mandatory.
5. I added some bins to the location.
6. In this step I wanted to adjust the inventory, so I searched for item journal. I filled in a row with positive adjustment, and just as you said this was done so I would have an Item Journal with the fields when exporting to excel.
7. I then created a config package for table 83 and exported it to excel. When all rows were filled I saved the file and imported it to the system.
8. The last step I did was posting the item journal and checked the quantities with a function called Items by location.
Does this sound correct to you?
Sounds perfect but add running the Bin Content Report so you can see all the Items in a Bin. You can run the report or view on the screen.
Sorry for delayed reply but took some extended time off. Run the Warehouse Bin List and set flag "show contents" in request page.
