When users view a particular invoice's distributions, they receive an error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." What does this error mean in the context of an invoice's accounting distributions, and how do we resolve it?

I have had this error in different scenario's in the past and an IIS-reset Always resolved this issue. I have had this issue when entering an item on a sales order line for example. Most of the times there was no explanation.
