D365F&O | Process Manufacturing | Prerequisite Setups|Part I

Hi Everyone,

Greetings!

In this blog post, I will cover the Setup and configurations for the Process Manufacturing in Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations (D365F&O). The purpose of this blog is to list down the series of prerequisite setups and configurations for process manufacturing industries.

Firstly we need to know What is Process Manufacturing?

Process Manufacturing:

Process manufacturing is the branch of manufacturing that is associated with formulas and manufacturing recipes and can be contrasted with discrete manufacturing, which is concerned with discrete units, bills of materials and the assembly of components.

Process Manufacturing | Prerequisite Setups | Part I

In Part I of this series, I will cover the following setups and configurations

  1. Resource Group
  2. Resources
  3. Calendars
  4. Route Group
  5. Routes
  6. Operations
  • Resource Group

A resource group is a set of operations resources that represents the granularity at which you want to schedule resources when you use the operations scheduling method.

The resource group defines the site, production unit, and warehouse context for operations resources that are assigned to the group.

    • Assign Operations Resource To Resource Group

When we assigning an operations resource to a resource group, the resource can be scheduled at the site where the resource group is located.

You don't have to assign the operations resources that you create to a resource group. However, an operations resource must be assigned to a resource group before it can be scheduled to perform work.

An operations resource can be assigned to a resource group for a limited time.

    • Assign Resource Group To Multiple Sites

You can also assign an operations resource to multiple resource groups so that you can then share the resource across sites. However, the effective dates and expiration dates can't overlap.

In other words, you can't assign an operations resource to two resource groups at the same time. Changes in resource group assignments are effective only for new resource allocations. Capacity reservations for jobs, operations, and project hour forecasts that are already scheduled won't be affected.

Note: When you assign operations resources of the Vendor type to a resource group, all operations resources that are assigned to that resource group must be of the Vendor type and must be linked to the same vendor account.

Create the new resource group and enter the resource group, description, and Site. Also, once the operation resources are created, make sure add them with the resource group.

  • Resources

There are six types(Vendor, HR, machine, tool, location, facility(building or fixed structure that is required to perform an activity) of operations resources available in D365, below are the details

I will use three operation resource for this demo, below is the SS

Calendars

A calendar can be assigned to an operations resource and describes the capacity (in hours) of that resource. The working times of the operations resource are determined by the calendar that is assigned to the resource group that the operations resource is part of. We can set an effective date and an expiration date for the assigned calendar.

We can then assign more than one calendar to an operations resource. However, the dates of the assigned calendars can't overlap, and the operations resource can be assigned only one calendar at a time.

We can also assign a calendar to a resource group to specify the working times for both the resource group and all the operations resources that are assigned to the resource group. The capacity of the resource group is calculated as the sum of the capacities of each operations resource that is assigned to that resource group. The calendar that is assigned to a resource group can change over time.

In order to set up the Calendars for production, we need to make sure to create the working times and working time templates.

Working Time Calendars

Create one standard 8 hours calendar which will be used for the production.

Working Time Templates

Create the working time template for the weekdays. In the below SS the working times are from (8AM to 12PM and then 1PM to 5PM)

Working Times

Use the working time form to generate the working times for the calendar. The working times will be created based on the setup times defined in the working time template.

Route Group

In the below screenshot, I will use the STD route group. Only setup time and run time will be enabled for the route group.

Routes

A route defines the process for producing a product or product variant. It describes each step (operation) in the production process and the order that these steps must be performed in. For each step, the route also defines the required operations resources, the required setup time and run time, and how the cost should be calculated.

Operations

Create the operations for the process, these operations will be used in the routes.
