We have a Dynamics 2015 On Prem instance and investigating using the Outlook plug in to allow users to create email activities for their Outlook sends to a specific contact in CRM. When they 'set the regarding' in Outlook and the sync occurs, it creates email activities on contacts that were not set in the Outlook plug in. It created activities on other contact records in addition to the one selected to 'set the regarding' in the plug in.. What will prevent this? Why does it not just create the activity on the one contact selected when setting the regarding contact?
This is expected standard behaviour. An Email Activity will always appear on all Contact records whose email address is present ont the email recipient fields. In addition to this you can set the Regarding field to point ot any record of an Activity enabled entity.
I would expect that if those were the circumstances. However, the email address of the recipient that was 'set to the regarding' is not the same active email address that is on the contacts that had the activities added. Those contacts have different email addresses.
