How to reuse contact-based authentication mechanism used by CRM Portal, in a third party website?

Hey there,

We have a custom website (developed using third party CMS) that creates a contact in D365 Online CRM with each user sign-up on the website. Moreover, it stores user credentials in the contact record. We are unable to find, access and hook into, authentication mechanism used by CRM Portal behind the scene. Hence, we redirect user to CRM portal for sign-in and it redirects user back with user identity after successful authentication.

Is it possible to access authentication mechanism used by CRM Portal and wrap it in Web API, so that we can authenticate user within the custom website, without redirection to CRM portal?
