Connecting to D365 database from MS Access (or Excel)

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

I am new to D365. I did some searches and found few ideas on how to connect to D365 via the SDK.
From my Desktop Access (2007)  I can connect to my remote SQL Server via ODBC.
But I would like to know if its possible to connect to my remote D365 database from within Ms Access (or Excel) using ODBC or native SQL driver.

I suspect this is possible but have been unable to find the syntax of the connection string for the DSN.
In other words; where is my D365 SQL Server db located?

    Hi Obby.

Out of the box you can conntect the actual Excel version or Power BI desktop with your Dynamics CRM Azure data.

In Excel you have to do the following steps:

    1. Data - New Query - From Other Sources - From OData Feed
    2. now you have to enter your OData Feed URL. The URL is like "https://Your CRMaddress/XRMServices/2011/OrganizationData.svc" (Your CRMaddress is usually something like XXXXXX.crm4.dynamics.com)
    3. in the next screen you have to choose the authentification. Here I always use "Organizational account"
    4. "Sign in" with your user data
    5. After a view seconds you will see the available entities
    6. select your needed entities by activating the tickbox and push OK

After these steps you will have your data from Dynamics CRM in Excel available to create i.e. a power pivot.

The steps to use OData in Power Bi Desktop are the same.

Right now there is no out of the box OData possibility available in MS Access. As far as I heard there are 3rd party OData ODBC drivers on the market. Maybe they support MS Access....

    Hi Christoph

It looks like ODATA feeds is the way to go.  I thought it was possible to connect Access directly to D365 but most search result articles seem to be for on-premises installation.

    Hi Martin

The D365 trial package I have is Enterprise Plan 1; I have installed CRM and Sales.

Which product from Dynamics 365 package do you mean?

You don't say that you want to do it from Office 365 either, you say you want either Access or Excel, but not from Word or Exchange. It's similar with Dynamics 365 - a solution for Operations (aka Dynamics AX) would be useless if you need Field Services (CRM), for example.

    Hello Obby.

Usually you run Dynamics 365 in Azure. So the SQL Database is also located in Azure and you do not have direct SQL connection possibilities.

You can use ODATA feeds instead.

If you use the onebox DEV environment you have SQL Server installed locally.

    Best regards

    Christoph
