Tenant to Tenant - Dynamics Instance Migration

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello,

Recently aquired a company and was looking to consolidate tenant portals by migrating everything to our primary. Email is doable and sharepoint appears to be painful, however, I cannot for the life of me find a way to migrate a CRM instance that doesn't involve backing up and restoring the data.

This seems to be alot more complex than it really needs to be. We don't even need to move the data itself from one spot in storage to another...we just need it to detach it from a portal and attach it to a new portal.

Is there anyone here with experience doing that? Any help would be appreciated.

I am in the same situation. Somehow it depends which version you are using, up to v8.2 tenant can be switched by Microsoft backend without export/import needs. As to v9 we have to wait until March for the same solution. That's what Microsoft suggested.

Not looking to merge instances. Just want to move the instance to our primary tenant portal.

You answered my question though as backup/restore appears to be the only option. I appreciate the feedback.

I wouldn't want to do that because it seems totally unnecessary. When it seems like you could just attach and reattach.

Let me understand the problem -

You have 2 CRM instances in 2 different tenants and you want to consolidate into one ?

This requires more detail and analysis as this is a merger of 2 CRM databases.

    Or

You have 1 CRM instance and want to move it from one tenant to another?

In this case back up and restore is the only option. Microsoft can help you with that.

Why would you not do that?
