VM for D365

Hi all,

I have some queries.

I want to set up a VM for the development of D365 for a client. My account has been added to VSTS.

I have asked the client to set up VM in their local server, but they denied it as their local servers are outsourced. Instead they asked me if I want to host VM in azure, which is not cost efficient. Is it possible to host VM in azure?

Can you let me know the system configuration required if I need to install VM in my laptop. I read 16GB RAM is recommended. What about the number of cores, processors and OS?

Also, to download VM from LCS, do I need some license? And if I set up VM on my machine, if I log into Visual Studio with my account that is added to VSTS, all the development that is done by other developers in the environment will be visible to me?

Thanks

Hm, try to navigate to https://connect.microsoft.com/ and log-in with your MS Live Id account. After that, try this link connect.microsoft.com/.../Downloads this should help. If second link wouldn't work, you fan manually search from "Directory" menu of the web site.

If it was helpful, please don't to mark your question as resolved. Thx!

Answering your questions one by one one :)

    1. Yes, you can host your VM in Azure and deploy it out of LCS

    2. You can host VM with D365 DEV box on your local PC. I was using 16GB of Ram, Core i5 processor and 256SSD(this is crucial), and was able to work quite smoothly.

    3. You can download VM from connect.microsoft.com (here is a link to the latest version: http://bit.ly/2idj1Cr). It would come with 30day trial for VS, so you would require VS license to use it(The one that comes with MSDN subscription will work just fine)

    Hope that helped

I was using Core i5 processor + 16GB of RAM, and it was just fine. I would say that HDD is the biggest bottleneck, so I ran VM on 256Gb SSD

you can host it but development time is going to be slow. Normal build operation is going to take lot of time

    Thanks for your advice.

But, my PC is having intel i7-4600u processor. Having 2 cores and 4 logical processors and is currently having 16 GB RAM. If I upgrade RAM to 24 GB, do the development activities run smoothly? I have read some where that 2 cores is enough. I am pretty confused because different blogs tells differently. Have anyone hosted VM in a system with 2 cores?

You can deploy VM from LCS. Machine with 32GB RAM and 8 cores works great for normal Development activities. As long as you are able to connect to VSTS URL and project all others developing in  ,you should be able to get development done by others.
