Printing sales orders / picking lists not working

Hi, we also get this issue.

So what happens is:
1: User opens sales order / Invoice / Picking list
2: User clicks print/send print confirmation
3: Once you click print or send to and its supposed to run it does not work.
4: The popup opens that usually opens and as soon as it closes nothing download or prints...

This happens then we close and reopen chrome then most of the time it works (For 10 minutes or 10 hours) its very random...
I am realising this is not a caching issue or wifi issue as this is happening by more of our branches...
I have the same question (3)

    Hi,

This issue is related to printing and downloading reports in Business Central via browsers (like Chrome) and is often caused by browser pop-up handling or session token issues, not Business Central itself.

    What I understand

    • Business Central uses pop-up windows for report rendering and download.
    • If the browser blocks or mishandles these pop-ups, the report process fails silently.
    • Closing and reopening Chrome refreshes the session, which is why it works temporarily.
    Recommended Solutions
    1. Allow Pop-ups for Business Central URL
      • In Chrome, go to Settings → Privacy and Security → Site Settings → Pop-ups and redirects.
      • Add your Business Central domain to the Allowed list.
    2. Clear Browser Cache and Cookies
      • Although you mentioned it’s not a caching issue, clearing cookies can help with session token refresh.
    3. Disable Extensions
      • Some Chrome extensions (ad blockers, script blockers) interfere with pop-up handling.
    4. Use Modern Print Management
      • If possible, use Business Central’s built-in “Send to PDF” or “Download” options instead of relying on browser print dialogs.
    5. Check Service Tier Settings
      • Ensure the Report PDF rendering is enabled and functioning on the BC service tier.

    Hi,

We’re experiencing the same issue with almost all our customers in France. It occurs across different tenants and with different app extensions.

The only workaround we’ve found is using CTRL+F5 in the browser, which is quite annoying. After clearing the cache, it works for a while (randomly) before the problem reappears.

    Thanks for your help!

If this is a recent issue it seems like a bug from Microsoft when printing reports. What version is your Business Central?

    Hi Devon,

Intermittent failures when printing or downloading sales orders and picking lists can be disruptive, especially when they affect multiple branches and browser refresh only provides temporary relief.

This issue is typically tied to how the report payload is handled by the browser and the BC client session. Here’s a clean diagnostic path to help isolate and resolve it:

    • Switch to Edge or Chrome (latest version): These browsers handle RDLC and Word layout rendering more consistently. Avoid Firefox or Safari for print-heavy workflows.
    • Disable pop-up blockers and third-party extensions: Some ad blockers or privacy tools interfere with the report rendering popup. Whitelist your BC domain.
    • Check report layout type: If the report uses RDLC, it’s rendered client-side. Word layouts are server-side. Try switching layouts to confirm if the issue is layout-specific.
    • Avoid printing from preview mode: Instead, use “Send to > PDF” or “Send to > Printer” directly from the document page. Preview mode can sometimes fail to pass the payload correctly.
    • Review Printer Selection setup: If you’re using direct printing, ensure the printer name is correctly mapped and accessible. Invalid mappings can silently fail.
    • Enable telemetry or use Event Viewer: SaaS users can enable telemetry to trace report execution. On-premises users can check the Windows Event Log for rendering errors or payload failures.
    • Check for known issues: Microsoft has acknowledged intermittent report failures in certain builds. Confirm your environment is on the latest cumulative update.

    Hi,

This behavior is often related to session or temporary report generation issues in Business Central rather than network or cache.

    Recommended steps:
    > Check Browser & Extensions: Use the latest version of Chrome or Edge without conflicting extensions that might block pop-ups or downloads.
    > Verify Permissions: Ensure users have proper permissions for the report layouts, printers, and “Send” functionality.
    > Test Standard Layouts: Switch to the standard RDLC/Word layouts to rule out custom layout issues.
    > Monitor Session Timeout: Random failures can occur if the session times out or the token expires while generating the report. Consider increasing the session timeout.
    > Server/Environment Health: Check BC service tier logs for errors during report generation. Sometimes, multiple users generating reports simultaneously can overload the service.
    > Use PDF Export Instead of Direct Print: As a workaround, try exporting to PDF first and then printing to reduce dependency on immediate print execution.

If the issue persists across branches and browsers, a support ticket with Microsoft is recommended, as it may indicate an environment-side intermittent problem.

    Thanks

    Hi everyone,

Look I know we can do workarounds and try to fix it doing printing pdf or use browsers like edge...
But this has never given any issues so why now? We have people that have been working with my company for years and they are used to doing something in a way. Going to them and telling them to download it using edge, refreshing using F5, send to pdf instead of direct print ect...

Does not work, is this a known issue that will get resolved or should I start to teach everyone how to do it other ways (Which is also not very stable at the moment)

    Hi

It’s a known intermittent issue affecting some tenants recently. Try clearing cache, switching browsers, and using the standard layout. If multiple users are impacted, it’s likely Microsoft-side, and raising a support ticket is recommended

    Thanks
    Nimsara
