Backup and Recovery Scenarios for Microsoft Dynamics

We are exploring the use of Microsoft Dynamics Online and have some questions about Business Continuity and Backup and Recovery aspects.

An organisation I work with has reasonably complex and stringent requirements because of strong retention policies that mandate being able to retain some data for 8 or even 15 years.

  1. What Backup techniques do people use beyond the "out of the box" system snapshots?  For example,
    • How do people satisfy retention policies that require you to be able to achieve a full and a partial dataset recovery point in time going back weeks or months or even years?
  2. Is it possible to take a backup from an instance in Tenancy A and restore it to Tenancy B/Other Dynamics online environment that has been created elsewhere, for example, when making a backup of an environment and wanting to move it to a totally separate environment so some UAT work can be conducted by a different set of users.

I've been struggling to find much information beyond articles such as https://technet.microsoft.com/library/mt748060.aspx and there appears to be a dearth of products (beyond https://skyvia.com/ and http://www.cobalt.net/the-crm-lab/dynamics-crm-snapshot/) so am keen to know more about other people's experience and thoughts on this topic.

There are not Transaction logs backups.  You need to do on demand backups but you can download them when you want them.    You can talk to Microsoft and they will let you keep retention for as long as you want.   Of course there is a  price that comes along with this but they will work with you on any compliancies..

Sorry, I mean SQL Server  transaction log.

    Hi Vilmos,

Besides snapshot/on-demand backup, does Dynamics 365 online provide transitional log recovery? My concerns is data loss in a disaster recovery.

    Thanks

Thanks for heads up.  I can see that on the Roadmap site.

Obvious next question is "when" this might be?  And more precision about the capabilities.

An obvious follow up would be does Microsoft need any real world customers with exacting needs that if you can satisfy then you will have cracked 95% of all other scenarios?  Do Microsoft want any Beta testers?  I would hope the answer is yes!  If so, please get in contact with me.

Thanks for a response - sorry if the tags mislead you but I didn't find one that was appropriate because it was a Dynamics-wide question not just specifically Sales or Customer Service.

    Cheers,

    Neil

Unfortunately customers cannot schedule their own backups to meet internal BC policies currently.

However if you look at the roadmap for CRM this feature is coming allowing you to run backups to Azure.

    Customer backup and restore

    UPDATED

As part of our trusted cloud investments, Dynamics 365 (online) customers will be able to do their own Dynamics 365 backups and restores to meet their business data recovery plans. Customers will be able to back up their Dynamics 365 database to Azure storage using a secure data transfer (not the public Internet). Customers will also be able to download and connect their backup to an on-premises environment. This feature provides several potential scenarios, including a local developer experience.

    Availability

    Application

    Dynamics 365 for Sales

    Dynamics 365 for Customer Service

    Dynamics 365 for Field Service

Dynamics 365 for Project Service Automation

As for point 2).  A service request to MSFT should allow you to migrate from one tenancy to another, but that will only work for another online environment and not on premise.

    Hope this clears your query.

Edit: just realized that after clicking your links that you are talking about CRM, so my D365 for Operations explanation does not apply for you. Please fix your tags for next time, since Other is a bit broad. That would be Sales or Customer Service.
