Moving from Platform Update 7 to Platform Update 8

Hi,

We are about to move our customer's Dynamics 365 for Operations Production environment (and UAT, Test and Dev and Build environments) from Platform Update 7 to Platform Update 8. We feel a little bit confused about the July 2017 update and I have some questions regarding that:

Is July 2017 application update included in Platform Update 8?

If not, is it mandatory for Platform Update 8, or can we run Platform Update 8 together with 1611 application?

I cannot find July 2017 application update in LCS, is this something we need to order from Microsoft?

Thanks in advance!

RE: Moving from Platform Update 7 to Platform Update 8

    Hi Johan,

the platform and the application are two separate things. You can install the platform updates on any version of the application. But application versions have a minimum required platform. November release (1611) requires update3 or above. July release requires update8 or above. Now, the platform updates can just be installed. Application upgrades require a code upgrade etc. The application also can't be "upgraded" as such - you need to deploy a new VM with that application and the platform you want (or get an older platform and update it).

Also see this post on my personal blog: daxmusings.codecrib.com/.../upgrades-updates-and-hotfixes-in-ax7.html

So to answer your questions, knowing what I explained above:

    1. it's the opposite. Update8 is included in July release. You can install update8 on 1611 if you want.

    2. no it's not mandatory, the platform is independent and compatible with all application versions. So yes you can install update8 on a 1611 application environment.

    3. there is no update, you have to get a specific VM for that application version. Again note that this requires a code and data upgrade so it's not an easy update like a platform is.
