I am working with a client right now that utilizes a spreadsheet to define the estimates for their projects including the hours for each of there tasks. The challenge is that many of their tasks are calculated based on multiple criteria.
1. Chart Reviews - X charts / hour - They would enter a quantity of charts and it would calculate the number of hours.
2. Dependent task on #1 Chart Reviews for different role that is the (hours calculated from #1 / 2.5)
2. Onsite Visits - 8 hours * number of locations = total hours for site visits
3. Analysis (no mathematical correlation between X, Y, Z)
X hours (under 151 charts)
Y hours (between 151 - 250 charts)
Z hours (between 251 - 400 charts)
More like this as well...
I am trying to determine the best way to set something like this up in PSA in a project template where they could enter the # charts, # facilities, #beds, and have it generate the hours for each of the tasks within the project plan. Is this something that can easily be done? Could I have a workflow that is built that if I entered a task that was based on # charts it would do the calculation and set the hours?
Thanks for your help here! Want to make this work and it has to be easy to enter.
Hi Drew. Interesting requirement. I think this would need to be defined in more detail to cover all angles, but based on your post, I would look at achieving this with plug-ins. From what you're writing, my understanding is that you insert the data, the numbers are then crunched and the lengths of all project tasks are then updated on one go.
If you're doing the calculations separately on each task, I'd re-evaluate and consider if a no-code approach is doable. I'm not fully seeing if the calculations you require are something that can or can not be accomplished with calculated fields or if they require code.
I spent a lot of time looking and I think the only path would be the plug-ins. If anyone else has ideas, let me know otherwise I will mark Antti's answer as verified in a day or two.
