We are seriously considering using Dynamics as our backend for a web-app built out of portal that is to be publicly deployed.
Is there a maximum number of simultaneous requests that can be made at one time?
If there is a limitation, can we increase it?
Is the question about D365 or an earlier version of AX?
I'm suggesting you are planning to use real-time techniques for integrating between D365 F&O and frontend like oData and web services. They are quite sensitive to the current load on the backend and if the backend is too busy you will get timeout errors or some other kind of errors.
I would say if you want to increase request capacity for backend you need more computing power in this case and as MS provides F&O as Saas solution, you would need to negotiate with MS about it.
There are also different options you could consider, like built backend on top of CDS use Dual-Write for integrating CDS and F&O ( docs.microsoft.com/.../dual-write-overview or utilize caching services to reduce the amount of request to F&O like Redis.

Also, there is a new feature that will be available soon for throttling on the F&O side docs.microsoft.com/.../priority-based-throttling
However we were thinking CRM instead of F&O though?
In this case, the topic should be moved to CE forum.
I will post one there but your answer opened a WHOLE new world of opportunities & discovery for me. Thank you so much!
