Issue while getting the Printout in Business Central

(5) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by 12
I’ve been encountering an issue since yesterday while getting print out and downloading the report in Business Central. Whenever I attempt these actions, I get stuck with a “An Error Occurred while trying to display the report” error message.
After Refreshing it works some time.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is it a known issue from Microsoft’s side, or does anyone have suggestions on how to resolve it?
Any insights or fixes would be greatly appreciated!

There have been a lot of reports from other users with this error so it seems like a bug, what version is your Business Central?

    Hi,

Intermittent report errors like “An Error Occurred while trying to display the report” can be tricky, especially when refreshing sometimes resolves it and the issue affects multiple users.

This behavior is often tied to how the report payload is handled by the browser or the print rendering engine. Here are a few clean steps to help isolate and resolve it:

    • Switch browsers: Some users report better stability using Chrome or Edge. Firefox and Safari occasionally mishandle report rendering, especially with RDLC layouts.
    • Clear browser cache and cookies: Cached report payloads can conflict with newer sessions. A full cache clear often resolves transient display errors.
    • Check report layout type: RDLC reports are rendered client-side, while Word layouts are server-side. If the issue is layout-specific, try switching to a different layout temporarily to confirm.
    • Review Printer Selection setup: If you're using direct printing, validate that the printer name is correctly mapped and that the user has access to it. Invalid payloads can trigger display errors.
    • Use telemetry or Event Viewer: If you're on-premises, check the Windows Event Log for payload formatting errors. SaaS users can enable telemetry to trace report execution failures.
    • Avoid printing from Preview mode: Some users report errors when printing directly from the preview window. Instead, try saving as PDF first, then printing from the downloaded file.

    Hi,

This usually happens due to temporary service or session issues in Business Central.

    Recommended steps:
    > Browser & Cache: Clear cache or try a different browser (Edge or Chrome) and ensure pop-ups are allowed.
    > Report Layouts: Test with standard RDLC or Word layouts to rule out custom layout corruption.
    > Session Timeout: Make sure your session hasn’t expired; intermittent success suggests token/session expiry.
    > Environment Health: Check BC service tier logs for errors during report generation.
    > Workaround: Export to PDF first, then print or download. This often avoids the immediate display error.

If it persists across users and sessions, it may be an intermittent Microsoft service issue, and opening a support ticket with Microsoft is recommended.

    Thanks
    Rishabh

    Hi,

    You can try below steps:
    1. Switch to Chrome or Edge and allow pop-ups.
    2. Clear browser cache and cookies.
    3. Check report layout type (RDLC vs Word) and try switching.
    4. Verify printer setup in Business Central.
    5. Use Send to → PDF and print from the downloaded file.
    6. If the issue persists across users, it may be a Microsoft service issue—open a support ticket (Services Hub)
Please mark “Verified” if it helps.

    Hi

It’s a known intermittent issue affecting some tenants recently. Try clearing cache, switching browsers, and using the standard layout. If multiple users are impacted, it’s likely Microsoft-side, and raising a support ticket is recommended

    Thanks
    Nimsara
